What to see in Palau

The perfect base to explore Sardegna

Right in front of the island of Maddalena, halfway between Costa Smeralda and Santa Teresa Gallura lies Palau. This village, which was a small fishing village until the 1960s, has now become a modern tourist center of Gallura, attracting thousands of tourists every year.

Attractions

Walking along the seafront of Palau that borders the marina, you will reach the town center. Here, a night market enlivens summer evenings along with typical restaurants and pizzerias, Sardinian craft shops, folkloric events in the square, and the open-air cinema on Via Nazionale. From the port of Palau, with a 20-minute ferry, you can reach the Island of La Maddalena, connected by a bridge to the island of Caprera. You will be captivated by the Garibaldi house museum, where the hero of the two worlds spent his last days, by the breathtakingly colored beaches, and by the trails and natural paths of these two islands, and more! It is possible to discover some of the 60 islets of the archipelago by sea, with a mini cruise lasting one day that will take you to the most beautiful beaches in the area. The symbol of Palau is the Bear Rock, a spectacular natural sculpture that resembles the shape of a bear, positioned on a panoramic point overlooking the Maddalena archipelago and towering over the town of Palau. The rock is just 5 km from the center and can be reached via a 500-meter trail accessible on foot. The territory of Palau preserves military fortresses dating back to the 1800s, which primarily served an anti-French control function. Among these is the Batteria di Monte Altura, easily reachable via the road leading to Porto Rafael. The site is in good condition and open for guided tours. From here, you can enjoy a splendid view of the islands of Maddalena and Corsica.
